Finally after 6 months of being here in Barcelona we have got around to buying a car, before that we had been renting from various car rental agencies. Whilst waiting for the new car I had to renew for a week on the rental because we weren’t sure exactly when the new one would be ready. Well guess what it was ready the day after (sods law I think that’s called) – a call to the rental company just confirmed that we wouldn’t be able to get any money back if we took it in early and as we had to send it back empty we had a full tank of petrol to use – there was only one thing to do …………. A Road Trip.

So the next day we dropped the kids at school and set off in the opposite direction to all the traffic, down along the coast heading towards Sitges. Now I’m not well known for planning trips properly and I actually had no idea where we were going, I just thought we would mooch along for a while until we found somewhere nice for lunch, as long as it was using up petrol I didn’t care!!

First stop was in Sitges for coffee and croissant at a really nice café on the beach, it was a great place to start and to be honest we could have stopped there for the day but, you know, we had petrol to use up.

So back in the car we get and we travel along the coast road, now at some point we lost the coast road (how you can actually lose where the sea is I don’t know but we did), and ended up going inland a bit before turning back again and finding ourselves in a very quaint, very quiet seaside resort. I have absolutely no idea where we where but this place was deserted – it really didn’t look promising, actually my dad said it looked like Brighton Beach circa 1950’s!!! Anyway we have a wonder around and finally find a restaurant that’s open and has some locals in so we decide to give it a go.

And guess what - it was bloody good! My dad had and I quote

The best plate of mussels I’ve had in my life

Actually he said it every time he ate one so you can imagine how often that phrase was repeated. Mum ordered Mountain Ham thinking it was some special kind of ham – nope it was just a huge Mountain of Ham the best she’d ever had (are you getting a picture here)? Me, I ordered Butifarra and yes it was very good – we finished off with Crème Catalan and coffee and waddled our way back to the car.

Now the trouble is I don’t know where this town is and we have to get back to school – so working on a principle that always helped me when I lived in Amsterdam, look for where the planes are landing and head towards there – sure enough we soon find a sign for Barcelona Airport and we make our way home.

Now there where only three problems with the day

One – we didn’t use hardly any petrol even with the air co blasting all day – honestly if you want a car that’s very good on petrol have a Corsa.

Two – because we’d eaten so much in the day I never got around to cooking an evening meal which hubby found very annoying seeing as he had worked all day and missed out on the best mussels …… blah blah blah….

And Three – I have absolutely no idea where this place is so the only way we can get back to it is if I manage to get lost at the same point again – what are the odds of that I wonder?????
