This Easter we had friends coming to stay with us, good friends who we met while both families were on secondment in Holland. One is Finnish, one is Spanish and the kids are confused (no not really just very good at languages).
Child number 2 is very excited, as their child no 2 is her old best friend, and as luck would have it they are on the move again to Spain, but unfortunately to Madrid not Barcelona – still I can see weekends over there shopping and they will be coming this way for the beaches. Both children no 1’s are too much of teenagers to be anything as uncool as excited but it’s OK everyone gets on well.
The kids had a great time up and down the beach on bikes, scooters and rollerblades – the grown ups also had a great time with a few bottles of wine and meals out (more about that in the next post).
The problems came on the Sunday – Wonder Woman and family came over to meet these friends and we all were having a lovely time sitting outside on the balcony – the kids were in the garden all playing baseball when ….. my child no 2 suddenly appears crying her eyes out and holding her mouth, yep she had got a baseball in the mouth – how it happened no one knows as she was the one who had hit it – anyway we get her calmed down and make her sit with a trusty pack of frozen peas on it, to bring the swelling down (it’s always frozen peas isn’t it). Luckily no teeth where damaged and all she has is a bruise, a cut and a pair of lips that Angelina Jolie would be proud of!!
After all that excitement the kids all decide to go for a last ride of the day down the beach, and our friend’s child no 1 comes back with the words

Friends child no 2 has fallen off the scooter and is on her way home
My friend says what has she done is she hurt to be met with a teenage shrug. At that point friends Child 2 comes in and looks very pale saying her arm hurts (but not crying) – luckily we’ve got Wonder Woman with us, who used to be a nurse, she takes a look at it and says off to hospital we go.
All the children are very quiet and a bit upset so we put a DVD on get the crisps out and prepare to wait a long time, but, after only 1 hour or so, in walks friend's child no 2 the proud owner of a cast and a fractured wrist – and she’s still smiling. Our friends said the staff at the hospital couldn’t have been nicer and did a really good job, which is always something good to know.
Looking at how our child reacted to a ball in the mouth compared to a broken wrist I think we are going to have some words about her drama queen tendencies – either that or does anyone know of a good stage school ……?????
