Catalonia shows a dynamism that is the envy of the Iberian Peninsula. Barcelona and its sphere of influence has 33% less unemployed than the rest of Spain. With 25% of the country's GNP, Catalonia is the industrial heart of Spain, with automotive engineering, electronics, chemicals and textiles as healthy, growing industries.
Currently 60% of Catalans work in the service and tourism sector, while the industry provides 36% of jobs. Unusually for Spain, only 4% of the population of the region work in agriculture. More heavily infuenced by European trends than by Spanish ones, the province has formed a strong bond with Languedoc-Roussillon and the Midi-Pyrenees region to form a unique 'Euroregion'.
atalonia also has excellent ties with Lombardy, Rhone-Alpes and Bade Wurtemberg, to which the region will soon be connected via the high velocity railway line through Perpignan.
